We specialise in Power Transmission products such as Gearboxes, Geared Motors, Screw Jacks and Geared Pumps. We have a network of distributors across the globe and we are now looking for representation in South Africa to serve a growing market.
We have zero budget for this project so we are looking for any useful advice or information to help us lay the foundations before we fly out and meet with potential partners in February next year.
Hello Gwin. My best advice would be to talk to Keith Lambourne email@example.com and Stuart Gibbons firstname.lastname@example.org who are very active in the South African market and have already set up facilities for their UK companies in the market. It is a very attractive market but does have some nuances which could trip up an inexperienced exporter.
Keith is Chairman of the Global Trade Network GTN and has a strong belief in encouraging new exporters
How zero is your budget?!
You definitely need to have contacts established before you go out or it will be a waste of time and money. You could research your own contacts – there is a reasonable on line presence in SA and I would expect a large company to have a website. You can then call and book appointments. Try and use Skype of course as it’s free.
If you have a few hundred pounds spare, try UKTI who will identify and book appointments for you. They may also invite companies to the Embassy which gives you great credibility.
I don’t deal with SA personally, my area is West Africa. Much is made of SA being the "gateway to business in Africa" and I don’t agree with that.
Good luck with the trip and I hope it’s a success for you.
