I am importing bedsheets from china, My stuff will come at Felixstowe port. Can some body help me to find out good clearing and forwarding agent please?
You need to obtain quotes from several freight agents to be sure you get good value for money.
BIFA is a trade association for freight agents which has rules for members so you could look at their web site and select some freight agents who are members. http://www.bifa.org/content/home.aspx
But remember you are legally responsible for everything the agent does for you and all the statements that he makes to customs on your behalf. You need to issue clear instructions to the agent. This should include origin, value, tariff classification and CPC code (the type of import e.g. permanent ordinary import to free circulation which is CPC 4000000).
Take care with the documents too as these are part of the statements that you make to customs. In particular take care if you have an origin statement from your supplier – it is your responsibility to make sure it is valid so that and duty discounts you receive are correct.
A good agent will help you with these things but will ensure that you are making the choices.
So don’t just take quotes – talk to the agents and see which ones give you the most confidence.
