Help finding distributors for furniture chalk paint?

Question

We have launched our own chalk paint/furniture paint and currently have recruited over 30 stockists in less than a month. We have just expanded into Ireland and are now looking for other distributors in other countries. Is there a particular website to look at? Or are there any companies that have databases of businesses already interested in this field?

Answer

Hi Michael
Very interesting product that I saw on your Facebook page.

Unfortunately its not as simple as that, the research has to be done, but you can subscribe to different sites that give you some databases.

I subscribe to http://www.xsortal.com/. I find it a very useful research tool. You will be able to find lots of contact details.
You can look at leads generated by UKTI https://www.businessopportunities.ukti.gov.uk/uktihome/register.html
You can look at leads generated by European Enterprise Network
http://een.ec.europa.eu/
You can look at websites of companies within the paint industry and see on their website a “where to buy tab”, ie who their distributors are in different countries. eg you can look at complimentary products to see who they use – so would the Dulux distributor in another country also be interested in a specialist Chalk Paint that can be used on furniture – probably yes.
You can also attend trade shows.
Since there are 196 countries in the world you cannot target them all. The advice for a smaller organisation would be to focus on local markets, so you have quite rightly started with Ireland then you can also look at europe (cheap to get top) perhaps with a focus on the similar culture of painting your own furniture, like they do in Scandinavia and Germany.
Once you have decided on a country then you could use their local chamber of commerce network to find companies who are in your field. You will find this also on Xsortal.
I have worked for Beckers before becoming a free-lance consultant, so I have some contacts and understanding of the paint industry, so don’t hesitate to contact me for a no obligation chat.
