Exporting Wooden Furniture to Australia
Question
We are having some difficulty in exporting Upholstered wooden furniture to Australia, currently we have to have the shipment Fumigated at Dockside in Australia. We would like to have our furniture fumigated prior to shipment in the UK with the appropriate certification but cannot find anyone who can carry out the process and guarantee to comply with Australian Import regulations. Does anyone know how to proceed.
Answer
Hello Philip
We regularly arrange for the export of wooden furniture to Australia. Unfortunately the act of fumigation locally ceased in March 2010 across the whole of Europe .
We until recently were offering fumigation in Singapore through a certain line, but even this seemed to cause more trouble than it was worth.
The only option now is to have to performed in Australia I am afraid.
If I can help you in any way further, please contact me directly.
Kind Regards
Clare

(Answered on behalf of UKTI Australia.)
“Fumigation is conducted as necessary on a case by case basis. If the furniture bears no evidence if borers or other insect infestation it is usually OK and fumigation isn’t required.
I’d suggest you speak to a freight forwarder/customs broker such as Henning Harders.(www.harders.com.au) who e deal with regularly and have found to be reliable and helpful and will provide the required information in detail. My contact there is John Newlyn
( [email protected]) who’d be happy to help.”
Hope that this helps
