Exporting shellfish to France
Question
Can anyone give a definitive answer to the question of “What are the regulations regarding the export of live shellfish (Winkles) from the UK to France?
Answer
Hi.
This is quite complex and not straightforward to answer, and we would need to ask further questions about their origin and their destination (human consumption, b2b, b2c, further processing, sale on markets etc)
the regulations cover food labeling, health control certification, cold chain control in transport etc…
There is specific legislation for aquaculture products and their placing on the market: https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/live_animals/aquaculture_en
a guidance document is available here https://ec.europa.eu/food/sites/food/files/animals/docs/la_aqua_cm_guidance_2009-4788.pdf
If the winkles are for human consumption, then the general food hygiene legislation from the EU also applies. the main reference texts are EC regulations and directives listed here: https://ec.europa.eu/food/safety/biosafety/food_hygiene/legislation_en
I invite you to contact your local Enterprise Europe Network office to discuss your export project and they should be able to help you: www.enterprise-europe.co.uk
sorry I can’t give a straight answer!
Kind regards
