Food and drink exporter case study: The Lakes Distillery

Who are The Lakes Distillery?

Paul Currie, the original founder of the Lakes Distillery, is a man with whisky in his blood. So it is hardly surprising that he might dream about it.

This is the story of a dream come true (not that it was an easy task!). Our vision is to create one of the leading malt spirits in the world, alongside offering one of the most unique visitor experiences in the Lake District. From a Victorian cattle farm to a world-class production facility of quality spirits, the creation of this unique venue was truly a labour of love.

Every detail has been carefully constructed to support the dream – from the restoration of the buildings through to the technology and hardware used to create the spirits themselves.

The science behind whisky is not a new process but the number of factors influencing the quality of the end product is numerous – these factors are what we make every attempt to shape, control and add flair. Find out more about our production processes below.

Where are you now with your export plans?

So far we’ve done a little bit of exporting but only on a small level. The plan over the next 4 years is to grow export sales from £100,000 to £3 million. The potential for exporting premium spirits is absolutely enormous – it’s very high growth.

How has the Action Plan helped The Lakes Distillery

Really helped in terms of identifying which markets we should be aiming for. It’s a big wide world out there and we have a big choice, so it’s been useful for prioritising where to aim for.

And how have you found the experience of the competition today?

It’s been good to meet other people in the same position as us. I’m sure we can learn from them on a few things.
