The European Union launches Business Missions

in Southeast Asia

Leveraging Singapore’s role as a business hub to access ASEAN markets

Singapore – Today, the European Union officially launched the EU Business Avenues in Southeast Asia, a business support programme which aims to assist small and medium companies from the EU, looking to enter or expand their businesses in the region. During this pilot phase, 120 companies will be selected to take part in three one-week business missions, where they will engage with relevant counterparts in Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Dr Michael Pulch, the EU Ambassador to Singapore who on the same occasion unveiled the latest trade and investment figures between the EU and the City State said, “the programme will strengthen the presence of SMEs from the EU in key markets in Southeast Asia”.

“As the EU’s leading trading partner in ASEAN and in view of the entry into force of the EU-Singapore FTA, Singapore is strategically placed to act as the focal point for the Business Avenues pilot and will be used as a launch pad to emerging markets in the region, in particular Malaysia and Vietnam” he added.

Business Avenues seeks to help businesses from the EU better understand the characteristics of the ASEAN market, with the ultimate goal of establishing mutually beneficial and lasting business relationships between companies in the EU and ASEAN. During the pilot phase, the Business Avenues programme will focus on Clean Technologies and Interior Design sectors, providing strategic, logistic and financial support to SMEs from the EU looking to gain first-hand experience of dynamic local markets.

The EU Business Avenues in Southeast Asia programme is built on the successful EU Gateway model of business support. Since 1994, EU Gateway has supported companies from various industries across the EU to extend their business in Japan and South Korea.
