Italian introductions

UK Trade & Investment’s Overseas Market Introduction Service has been a key component of Utility Partnership Limited’s strategy as it has established itself in Italy.

Set up in 1996, Utility Partnership Limited (UPL) provides utility infrastructure, smart metering and energy services. One of the industry’s most innovative companies, it helps its corporate clients to save millions of pounds off their electricity bill, by negotiating with energy providers on their behalf. The company’s international clients have taken the company into new markets. But, in 2008, it made a conscious decision to move into Italy.

UPL commissioned an Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) report, asking UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) to carry out some background market research. A second OMIS, in which UKTI identified potential clients, gave the company the confidence to open an Italian subsidiary in July 2009. Through a third OMIS, UKTI listed suitable guests for a launch party, which was held on the roof terrace of the British Consulate in Milan. UPL’s latest OMIS saw the company deliver a workshop at the Consulate for 30 local businesses, about how to save energy.

“Not only is OMIS great value for money, but as a bespoke service, it provided us with exactly the information we were looking for,” says Gary Mawer, Founder and Chairman of UPL. “UKTI has helped us with the different aspects involved in setting up in a new market.”
