Drama based company helps boost young people’s confidence down under

Whitley Bay-based company Gibber has taken its first steps into international markets thanks to support from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).

The company, which uses bespoke drama to educate and inform schools and drama based training for businesses and local authorities, has recently taken to a whole new stage – working with school children in Sydney, Australia.

Although Gibber have and continue to work very successfully with, amongst others, local schools, The British Heart Foundation, Benfield Motors and Home Group they were naturally cautious about trying to replicate their success overseas.

The company were given access to a dedicated International Trade Adviser and financial support as part of a tailor-made ‘Passport to Export’ package from UKTI alongside help in researching the market and highlighting potential business contacts through the ‘Overseas Market Introduction Service’.

As Director, Tim Watt, explains: “Having been in business for 14 years we have enjoyed considerable success both in the North East and across the UK but were sure that there was a wider market for our services. Like most first time exporters we were unsure about how to find out which overseas markets would work best for us and how to then go about accessing them.

We are about to deliver 50 programmes in Sydney, to a total of 5000 school children and this is only the beginning! We are planning to launch our highly successful drama based business training in Sydney later this year”

The programme Gibber are delivering in Sydney is aimed at young people planning their futures and thinking about whether or not to continue into higher education. The performances are designed to encourage young people to make the most of their opportunities and not to be afraid to aim high and echo similar projects they have been running in the UK for many years.

Lissa Balmer, one of UK Trade & Investment’s International Trade Advisers, said:

“Gibber had a great service to offer and an excellent track record in developing and delivering the programmes clients in the UK wanted. All they needed was some introductions to suitable contacts in Australia and some advice from our country and sector experts on how to make the most of the opportunities out there.

I’m delighted that their first foray into exporting has been so successful and am sure it is just the first of many overseas opportunities for them.”
