Checking in for Global Success

Aviation security manufacturer, Quadratica increases profitability through export, with help from UK Trade & Investment support in Yorkshire.

Based in North East Lincolnshire, Quadratica (UK) Ltd specialises in the development and provision of high quality Computer Based Security Training to both the airport security and travel industries. Quadratica delivers both Web Based Training (WBT) and Computer Based Training (CBT) in countries across the world, offering a flexible but consistent training service that is both time and cost efficient for their clients. Major clients in the UK include the HM Prison Service, Manchester Airport Group and the Olympic Delivery Authority. Its main product is training in image interpretation for baggage security.

When Managing Director Chris Grey first joined the company in 2005 he knew that export was on the cards. Already one of the leading providers in the industry, the UK market was never going to big enough to sustain the company’s future growth without developing new and different products for alternative domestic markets. With the aviation security market benefitting from consistent regulations worldwide he knew there was a bigger market out there for their successful products. With a good reputation, the company developed a new, updated product model and software and began to develop a war chest from initial sales in the UK that allowed Chris to then look to the international market from 2006.

“Without export we wouldn’t be where we are now – there is no doubt. The UK market is saturated and there is no competitor for us to replace in the UK. Export allows us to continue to grow”

Passport to Export

UKTI’s Passport to Export Programme for new and inexperienced exporters proved to be just the ticket to help the company get started on their expansion overseas. Having already benefitted from finance and investment from the European Regional Development Fund, European Social Fund and the Yorkshire and Humber Equity Fund programmes, the company was familiar with some of the government support made available to businesses and so contacted UK Trade & Investment for this purpose. Whilst starting the Passport to Export Programme had initially been about accessing further funding, Chris explained that it really brought everything together for Quadratica and the training sessions opened their eyes to a lot of information, access to intelligence and support. As a result Chris developed a campaign to utilise as much of the support as possible.

“Passport to Export was a huge eye opener for us in terms of what support is available for businesses. I would really advise that you get as much advice and support as you can get from anyone who is prepared to give it”

Using what he learned on the programme, the advice of his International Trade Advisor and his own research, Chris identified a number of countries with a good credit risk rating and increased spending on the aviation industry, where training would soon be a requirement. With the support of UK Trade & Investment trade missions were carried out for China, India, Brazil, the Middle East and the Czech Republic. In the Czech Republic for example, as a direct result of the trade mission and intelligence from UKTI officers at the embassy in Prague, he has now appointed distributors
