Qualifying for Proof of Origin

Question

Hi.. I am applying for a Approved Exporter Status and trying to review and understand the guidelines. Our product is ultimately a circuit board with off the shelf parts soldered on. Our product is this collection of these parts and the software we write the runs on the board.

I am trying to understand how to calculate the origin, we fall into HS code 8535, however as most of the materials for our product are purchased in the BOM is > 40%. So my question is can I include software we have developed, additional handling and configuration of the product once the contract manufacture has sent it to us? if so how? The Bom makes up 61% of our ex-works price.

Sorry lots of questions but struggling to get a clear guide on how to complete this process.

Answer

I would suggest contacting your local Chamber of Commerce, as they usually handle certificates of origin and should know how the rules are interpreted!

The Institute of Export or a commercial organisation such as Chadwick Export Services can provide answers and training, if appropriate.

I hope that will help to point you in the right direction.
