Roger Frampton, on behalf of ExportAction in Clearwater, Florida, USA.

Hi Stephan

We would be pleased to try and assist with your aspirations for the USA, but you would need to provide us with some information about your company and products.

Our experience indicates you will almost certainly find exporting food and drink products to the USA easier if you have a company, address, telephone, etc established in the USA - especially when dealing with the requirements of the Food & Drug Administration.

All foods, drugs, medicines and cosmetics must have labeling or packaging that complies with the regulations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). All other products must comply with the regulations of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Information regarding labeling and packaging requirements can be obtained by contacting the FTC; printed packaging and labeling requirements from the FDA; and general inquiries from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The USA is a great market for food and drink products. PepsiCo is a global food and beverage leader with net revenues of more than $65 billion and a product portfolio that includes 22 brands that generate more than $1 billion each in annual retail sales. The company’s main businesses include Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade, Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola.

Selling direct to consumer, with more than 14,000 outlets, McDonald’s does not have the most locations. That title goes to Subway with 24,722 so-called restaurants. However, the maker of the “Big Mac” dwarfs competitors with 2012 sales in the USA of more than $34 billion.

Kind regards
Roger Frampton

Richard England, on behalf of Consulting for Export in WD3.

Stephan,

I have assisted several food and drinks companies, small and large, to export from the UK to markets in Europe and directly been responsible for exporting niche food and drink products (wine, spirits, olive oil, Feta cheese, etc) from Greece to the USA, Canada, Australasia, Japan, Singapore, Russia and most countries in Europe. This process has included finding and appointing agents and distributors which can be different depending on the end user to be targeted.

There are many questions from my side about the type of product, ambient life of the products, packaging, labelling, production capacity, whether you are a new exporter or wanting to export to new markets, your organisation structure, time and resource available, what market research has already been undertaken if any, etc?

If you are considering countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, then we have excellent in-market partners who can identify the right potential local agent/distributor for you, set up appointments and meetings with them and also attend the meetings with your company's representatives to ensure you receive the best advice on how to proceed.

Helping your business to grow globally.

You could prospect companies who recently attended the SIAL 2012 brokering event, as part of the SIAL trade fair in Paris. The companies listed on the online catalogue all had an interest in trading with international partners: http://www.b2match.eu/sial2012/participants
