Exporting from the UK to the US using Amazon.com

Question posted by Catherine Pain

Hi there, thank you for any help.

I am going to be selling on Amazon.com (I am a small UK based business).

I understand I do not have to apply Sales Tax (e.g. US duties) as I do not have a physical presence in the US - is that correct?

Many thanks again,

Hello Catherine,
Sales tax is different to import duty - think of it as a sort of VAT although it is not quite the same.

Different States in the US have different levels of Sales tax applicable at import.

If you are selling via e-coms you are required to add the relevant sales tax to your invoice.

There are moves to look at changing this but for the moment this is the rule.
