Chicken Export to China from UK

Question posted by Mike Webb, on behalf of Natural Sports Nutrition in HU17

Is it possible to export chicken breast to china from the UK?

We use chicken breast (sourced from Thailand) in our ambient meals and have identified a distributer in China who is interested in our products.

Dear Sir/Madam

Unfortunately, there is currently no way to export chicken directly into China.

My colleague, Claire Urry and Holly Chen specialises in the Agric / Food sector between China and the UK. I strongly recommend you contact them for further information and clarification.

They can be reached at: Claire.Urry@cbbc.org (CBBC UK)

Thankyou for your reply, I will contact your colleagues for clarification.

I am aware that Tesco exports chicken feet from the UK to China, so I'm surprised that we cannot export the chicken meat!

Best regards,
Mike

DEFRA is working with the Chinese authorities to reach an agreement on the export of poultry meat to China. The intention is that this agreement should include products such as chicken feet. This process takes time due to the great importance of getting it right, there are human health implications if standards are not sufficient. The negotiations include agreeing specifications with the Chinese authorities that exporters have to adhere to. It's likely to take several months before UK plants which have been specifically approved based on meeting those specifications can export poultry meat to China. Any companies selling poultry in China at the moment cannot source it from the UK until this process has finished
