Opportunity for UK companies to provide equipment and services to Bulgarian municipality under an Integrated Urban Transport Project.

Bulgarian municipality has received a senior loan of EUR 10m to co-finance its city’s Integrated Urban Transport Project. The Bank’s loan will co-finance a larger project, which is funded by the European regional Development Fund grants of up to EUR 47m under the Operating Programme Regional Development.

The proceeds of the loan will be used on investments that will cover many areas of the City’s urban transport system reforms. Key investment components include introduction of a Bus Rapid Transit system, including introduction of dedicated and segregated bus lanes and bus priority at traffic lights and replacement of obsolete and inefficient rolling stock with new; clean diesel and compressed natural gas buses; and development of a 20 km cycling network and pedestrian facilities. Alongside these investments, the project includes integrated electronic ticketing and a real-time passenger information system.

The Bank intends to co-finance the following contracts:

  • New diesel buses (18 m) – EURO 5

  • New CNG buses (12 m) – EURO 5

  • Integrated ticketing system

  • Real time passenger information at bus stops and vehicles

  • Real Time Public Transport Control System

  • CCTV

  • Bus infrastructure (bus lanes, bus ways, stops)

  • Cycling facilities

  • Bus Station near Railway Station (infrastructure)

  • Bus Terminal Meden Rudnik (infrastructure)

  • Central bus stop

  • Detailed technical design bus depot and workshop

  • Upgrade bus depot

  • Diesel and CNG station

  • Detailed design pedestrian crossings

  • Pedestrian crossings

  • Detailed design BRT and bus terminals

  • Detailed design cycling facilities

  • Technical design supervision during construction

  • Independent construction supervision during construction

  • Feasibility study – Intercity terminal

  • Feasibility study – Park and Ride

  • Feasibility study – BRT upgrade

Tendering for contracts began in the second quarter of 2012.
